Surrey Children's Choir
The award-winning Surrey Children's Choir was founded in September 1992 by director, Stephen Horning and 24 choristers. They made their debut in November 1992 in "Parade of Choirs" at the Vancouver Orpheum Theatre with return engagements in 1994, 1995, and 1997. The SCC were the feature children's choir at the Gala Concert for the "Surrey City Celebration" when Surrey became a city in 1993 and in May 1995 they won the Burnaby Festival's Concerto Competition and a performance with the Vancouver Symphony. The choir also performed for the Lieutenant Governor at the Surrey Foundation Inaugural Gala and at the unveiling of Future Surrey. In 1998 the SCC made its first CD, the popular "Christmas Treasures" and successfully participated in the famous International Choral Kathaumixw Festival. The choir has also toured extensively in BC, attended the prestigious "Pacific International Children's Choir Festival" in Eugene, Oregon and in March 2001 was a participant and host choir at the World of Children's Choirs 2001, the largest children's choir event of its kind in history, held in Vancouver.
In spring 2000, the SCC and SYC presented Henry Purcell's opera masterpiece, "Dido and Aeneas" to rave reviews. Alex Browne, Peace Arch News "succeeded brilliantly. . . produced goosebumps . . . each member of the chorus played his/her part like a star. . . "
The Surrey Children’s Choir is a consistent gold medal winner at local festivals. Gerald Van Wyck, Vancouver Community College, adjudicator: “you are one of the best children’s choirs in Canada.” These exuberant young voices are heard often at civic and community events and have appeared live on CBC Radio. The choir season begins with a Fall Retreat to Camp Narnia on Vancouver Island and includes weekly rehearsals, Fall and Winter voice workshops and a Spring Saturday choreography workshop, community performances, festivals, retreats, and touring. Concert presentations include our traditional Christmas Concert, Choral Reading of Dickens's 'A Christmas Carol', the Spring Orchestra Concert and the year-end staged Summer Concert. The SCC undertakes a large tour every 2nd year and a smaller one on alternate years.
This year, the SCC is thrilled to be touring to the UK for the 2009 Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales.
